SACRED RECIPROCITY
Making the documentary film LISTEN is important to me for many reasons not the least of which is because I believe deeply in sacred reciprocity. Sacred reciprocity is deep understanding and practice of balanced, harmonious, and respectful relationships between humans and the natural world, as well as among individuals and communities. It is tied in with what we see in Nature as systems and symbiosis—close and often long-term interaction between species, where both parties benefit from the relationship—and emphasizes the interconnectedness, balance, and mutual dependence of all living beings and elements in nature. It acknowledges that giving and receiving are essential aspects of a healthy relationship.
Sacred reciprocity recognizes that when you ask for something and then it is given to you, you must honor it. In 2023, I went out on the land in the Mojave Desert to give thanks for my life and to pray for a vision for my next chapter of life (my 19th year of going on Vision Quest). Nature gave me the message that inspired this film: “I have all the answers you need,” she said. “You just need to listen to me more.”
Making a documentary is a fantastic way to share this message and inspire more people to give thanks to Nature, who gives us so much, and to listen to her wisdom ways.
WHY THIS FILM SHOULD BE IMPORTANT TO YOU
Mainstream media focuses on doomsday narratives but there are beautiful and exciting solutions to the many challenges we face in the world today—we just don’t hear about them enough!
LISTEN brings a reminder of the joy and purpose that comes in listening to Nature.
But it’s not just a pretty picture. LISTEN brings active hope, revealing the stories of leaders driving change inspired by listening to nature— entrepreneurs, wisdom elders, engineers, scientists, mental health professionals, and business leaders—who remind us how to listen and show us a healthier and more joyful way forward.
THEORY of CHANGE
Our theory of change is based on the power of Nature connection. When we reconnect with our inner Nature and remember that we are part of Nature, part of an interconnected ecosystem, we also remember we matter; we feel a sense of belonging, a longing to give back, an inspired sense of purpose. This is good for personal mental health and the health of all beings on this planet we call home.
Subjective & Cultural Impact:
The LISTEN film will be a contributing lever in the movement to reconnect humanity with the wisdom power of Mother Nature. LISTEN will help propel this shift in consciousness and culture.
Program participants—from kids in the foster system, to teenagers, and business leaders—will engage in Nature-based experiential learning informed by ancient wisdom traditions. All programs are offered on a sliding scale, including full scholarship, so as to provide access to a diverse group of individuals, which then adds to the richness of the experience for all participants—and includes:
- Vision Quests
- Nature Immersions
- Listening Walks
- Fire ceremonies
- Quests for Vision.
